The initial batch of 150 CD copies of GOODBYE VICTORY ROAD part 1 came in a gatefold sleeve without a lyric sheet. The 2nd issue came with full lyrics and included two songs (Start Again and Somewhere) that were missing from the first issue. The introduction below never made the booklet due to lack of space..

INTRODUCTION

After the 2nd world war and the election of Clement Attlee‘s Labour party Britain finally got a national health service, council housing, comprehensive schools and other services that civilised society takes for granted.     Supposedly we’d won the war but the fact that we were bomb damaged, had an industry only fit to produce war materials (and because of lend lease) were in massive debt to the USA it meant the end of both the empire and our position as the worlds number one financial and military power. It would be worth pointing out to those who feel that the empire lorded it over weaker nations and robbed them blind that during Britain’s dominance of the world over a period of 400 years the vast amount of wealth created and accumulated did not improved the living conditions of it’s working people who were in the main still starved, worked to death and living in terrible conditions.     Despite the debt Britain was in (and it must be said with good intention) The Labour party pushed ahead with the building of a New Jerusalem and the long awaited homes fit for heroes. This was done with more money borrowed from the US at suicidal interest rates….. Thus we have now come full circle and have discovered that the foundations that our modern world is built on are unsound.    So now this is Billy’s time....... He doesn’t have to understand the reasons why but he learns fast   that if you’re born to live in Victory Road Estate then your options are limited..... Just another generation following in their fathers footsteps.

GOODBYE VICTORY ROAD  part one

LONG TIME TILL WE’RE ALL GROWN UP

Victory Road kids

Yeah we know the streets – but we don’t know the world

We know the neighbours – but we’re just boys and girls

And it’s a long time – till we’ll be all grown up

Living in the big world – Living in the big world

All the things we see – we don’t learn ‘em on TV

Find things out ourselves – dream what we will be

Coz it’s a long time – till we’ll be grown up

Living in the big world – Living in the big world

We don’t read the papers – we don’t watch the news

Just know what the streets say – we only see the truth

We always make our own fun – invent all our own ideas

We don’t have no money – we don’t know no fear

…. But one day we’ll be all grown up

Our Mums and Dads talk to us – but we don’t talk to them

They say what we should wear – teach us not to swear

Their lives, they were hard – but ours now will be better…. When we’re

Living in the big world – Living in the big world – Living in the big world

AINT GOT TIME

Narrator / Billy / Teacher

Early to rise….it’s still dark outside

Goes out in the pouring rain - clutching the sandwich his mum made

Guess it’s gonna be - another bleak day

Factory looms larger than life - runs the last hundred yards to be on time

Billy James- Wha’d yer wanna be when you get older

D’yer wanna fly a plane – be a footballer - or maybe a soldier

Mr James in front of the box - he’s wasting away

While Billy’s on a factory line eight hours - scrapping a wage

Does a man’s work – sure beats any education

Aint no - regulations – just more cheap labour for the corporation

Billy James- Wha’d yer wanna be when you get older

D’yer wanna fly a plane – be a footballer - or maybe a soldier

Billy James- Wha’d yer wanna be when you get older

Aint got time - to think about that - got too much on me shoulders

And the other day - I heard - a politician say

This is what made Britain great – back in Dickens’ day

Billy James - Billy James - Billy James……..

You get one chance Billy and that’s your lot…. You’re a bright kid - and you’re gonna throw your future away….. Me dad aint, well, what am I supposed to do…... Just think about it Billy, that’s all I’m asking…..

there’s nothing to think about, you wouldn’t understand, I’ve got no choice…….

you wouldn’t……..understand

SPACE CADETS BROKEN WINDOWS

Billy / Pip / Teacher 1 / Teacher 2

C’mon Billy, let’s get through here. Quick no-one’s looking

Phillip is his mum’s special boy – a space cadet, an inventor

He takes his toys and stuff apart – to create something better

…..Then smashes it up…. In a fit of frustration

Pip…. is a strange boy   -   I never know if it’s all accidental

Pip…. is a strange boy   -   Pip is my best mate

I first met Pip at St Mary’s – A kid with a twitch - out of his tree

His Dad hoped they’d wear him out – like a windmill in every bout

….. No he’s never scared…. Just full of frustration

Pip.... is a strange boy   -   I never know if it’s all accidental

Pip… is a strange boy   -   Pip is my best mate……….He is fucking mental

Phillip is a nice boy, he is a bright boy – He can be difficult,

destructive …... He needs to be creative

I’ll try to get him in a class – for piano and guitar

He’ll love to sing and play – la la – la la – la

Hey you boy go and see the head… what again

Yes boy tell him to give you the cane….. what again

And then go straight to sanctuary…. And sit there with the stupid kids

The problem kids – the difficult kids….. or don’t come in at all

Go anywhere you like – give me some peace of mind….. this is really boring

So we go looking for adventure – where we’re not allowed

Find gaps and crawl through fences – climb into falling buildings

Breaking windows in a world that’s lost

Pip goes throwing bricks at old rusting bombs

…. Look here comes the man – he’s got his big black angry dog

Here he come’s….. quick run…… ha ha ha

So we run like mad -  we pull each other back

We trip and we fall – and we crawl….

back under the fence – into the street

And we laugh for a long time - For we’ve a long time to be - something

and no we can’t see ahead….. can’t see the future, can’t see the dead ends

special boy    special boy     special boy     special boy

EXPERIMENTS

Billy

Always say we ain’t no use – and wonder why we refuse

Our so called betters, real go-getters – we’ll turn out to be

Could’ve tried harder - That’s all they ever say

Could’ve tried harder – Don’t tell us we’re to blame

Some kids they never learn to write –busy learning to survive

Gave no ambition - just mental malnutrition – and send us on our way

We’re experiments – from the flats and tenements

We are experiments

We are experiments

Bit by bit we come to realise – that someone’s planned our lives

But what can we do about it – is there no way out ?

I suppose there could be a break for a lucky few

But kid you gotta make the most of your youth

that’s the truth…… the unspoken truth…… that your teachers never tell you.

Your teachers’ll never tell you – that you’re experiments

experiments….…experiments….… gotta know your place

experiments….…We are we are the - human waste……

And anyway – no kid here – will get to do what they wanna do

The rich kids’ll get - all the good jobs you know it’s true

We’re just lab rats - going round on a wheel

For kids from the estate – none of this is re-al

A dead end just - like my dad – that’s the way it’s gonna be

No, we aint gonna make it…. No, we aint gonna make it….

No, we aint gonna make it…. We’re not supposed see ?

MY EARLIEST MEMORIES

Billy

I was born in the local mothers and babies and christened William Charles James….. that’s me getting my first dig (baby crying) …..  anyway everyone round here just knows me as Billy.

My earliest memories – we’re sharing an old house with strangers

I’m being bathed in front of the fire – I’ve a children’s book with cloth pages

I sleep with my mum and Dad – there’s a cooker in the front room

and we share the loo out on the landing – with two other families

These are thing that they’ll never see – These are my earliest memories

Then little Graham  - he comes along – and we move -  to a brand new block

I can look down and see ships on the river – from the long balcony outside our front door

I share a bedroom  - with my brother – we’re up on - the 7th floor

And we overlook the old flats – where we say the poor kids live

Which really is quite funny - coz we aint exactly rich

These are thing that they’ll never see – These are my earliest memories

It’s a nice place to live – and everything’s new

and we’ve got a bath – and there’s central heating

And I play round the flats – where the big kids will trap you

in the underground garage – and say - “beg or we’ll give you a beating

But my Dad’s he’s a big man – say’s don’t cry, no need to worry

Lets’s have it - jab and cross son –stand up to those bullies

And soon it seems the boxing club – is my second home

And then there’s more important things than school – so I don’t have to go

So from an early age – when we learn what to believe

I gave up listening to them and these became my streets

I never listened – coz I knew they could never see

These are – my earliest memories

Ahhhhh - These are – my earliest  my earliest memories

Generation - Generation - after generation

These are…….my earliest memories

START AGAIN  (KUNG-FU FIGHTS)

The New Wave’s singer

Meanwhile up in town some kids are planning another revolution

Get the train up town – where the streets gone quiet

Office workers back – where they come from

Under street lights – the freaks come out to play

And the bored – and the brave

China town deserted – ‘cept for skinheads looking for kung fu fights - Tonight

Kids looking for revolution – we thought this was the time

Please don’t give up – or teenage dreams will die

These are the days of punk rock – but it’s failing

Bands selling out – down dirty stairs behind street railings

Another basement club – acting tough - Kids looking for revolution – Tonight

Don’t care much for DJ’s – but you can’t knock it when they play

Bowie, Motts, The Who, Dr Feelgood and Slade

We better make the most of it – and make our plans….……… Tonight

So the bands are selling out – and slogans replace truth

Kids looking for revolution – what we gonna do

Kids looking for revolution – thought this was the time

Please don’t give up – or teenage dreams will die……………… Tonight

THESE ARE MY STREETS

Billy

And now my world stretches - from Victory Road - to Kingsman parade

And to the other side of town – where the bombs were made

Yeah I knock about with the sharp young mods - And the dockyard skinhead yobs

Took a brush and can - and painted mods rule……outside the school

I’ve caught on early to the way they deceive yer –I’m a disconnected young believer

These are my streets – These will always be my streets – These are my streets

I wear a fishtail parka – haircut from the cover of My Generation

Like the infamous Sawdust Caesars - now I’m - an unbeliever

We are the mods - we are the the mods - we are, we are – we are the mods

So I’m getting into aggro – and I don’t lay off the beer

And I hear some people say – that it’ll only end in tears

They say I’ll spoil my prospects – and big time invitations

But so what ? – you know I aint got no expectations

Before I go out – a quick look in the mirror – Coz I wanna look sharp

Be the business….. coz this who am – not a mug….. who can be pushed around

Yer know they can love me or hate me – coz none of em matter

Billy / Janice

Watcha  Billy… oh alright Janice…. er d’yer wanna go to Saturday morning pictures, I’ve got some money….. ah that’d be awful nice Billy….. come round and knock for me

……And Janice - Oh she’s really pretty - and I wanna tell her - Yeah I do……..

Tell her she’s the one……Well that’s the flashback done

Now Janice’s got a job in a record shop

And I’m knocking up muck for a brickie

Cash in hand saving for a Lambretta

Coz I wanna ride up - and impress her

…... But I aint bothered ‘bout that – I’ve always liked you – I always will

And yeah I understand…….your not a boy now – you’re a man

All the lads wanna go out with her - All the lads wanna be her first

And I don’t know why ?  - But me I’m just too shy

But then last night at a party – drinking cider with me mates

I got brave and I kissed her - yeah I kissed her – and that was yesterday       Na na na

Now me and Janice are going steady… she say’s she loves me

me and Janice are going steady… oh yeah

Where are we going ? – Will we get married ?

I suppose it’s a  dream ? – yeah I know that’s silly

It’s hard to make plans – How can you dream

When all you know – Are the local streets ?

…..……  No, We don’t think about that

…..……  No, We don’t – think – a - bout that………

Coz me and Janice are going steady.… Coz me and Janice are going steady

Coz me and Janice are going steady …..she say’s she loves me

Yeah me and Janice are going steady… oh yeah

WHO’LL DO THE SHIT JOBS ?

Narrator / Billy / Pip

The afternoon sun bakes a crowded street

And people with ill fitting clothes - and blistered feet

Too proud or too busy to take a blow

Picking up the pieces - but they don’t know

That everydaaaay is another day

That everydaaaay is another day

It’s hard to say what keeps em going all day

To be second class - and out of date

Look up in awe - and down in hate

Say, yeah everyone - should know their place

And everydaaaay is another day

That everydaaaay is another day - And if we all make it

…… Then who’ll doooo ….. the shit jobs eh ?

GRANDAD’S MISCELLANEOUS MILITARY MEMORABILIA

Billy

As a kid I’d visit Grandad

He lived in the Guinness buildings down the Old Kent Road

…….They were pre-war flats that had seen better days

They all looked in on each other - and the sun never got in

……There was no grass to play on

I remember grandad had an old piano - but no-one ever played it

He liked to watch his old black and white tele

….And sometimes he’d let me look at his medals ‘n’ stuff from the war

…….Old photos of him in the desert with the 25 pounder he used to fire

Photos of him and his mates

…..His ribbons, cap, badges - and the stripes he wore when he was a corporal

Grandad I never saw you smile

I never missed you when you died

I don’t mean to sound off – that’s just the way it was (then)

Grandad’s was a long way on a – (number) 53 - for mum and me

so I didn’t know you enough

To know if you were lonely

Coz grandma walked out on you

Left you for a bookie

Left you and your daughter (my mum)

So much for the war - you won

Grandad I never saw you smile

I never missed you when you died

I hope you had - some best times in your life

lala lala la laaaaa

oh Grandad - I suppose I didn’t think about it back then

You didn’t have nothing to show - for fighting for this country

Or all the hard years you spent - working since a boy.

Grandad who were you – who am I ?……GRANDAD

He died in 1970 from lung cancer

He’s a jammy bugger – good luck to him, that’s what I say.

VICTORY ROAD  BUBBLE

Billy

Every Saturday morning tele America’s great

Leave these grey shores and let’s run away

Into a future of cowboys, ghettos

the yanks are coming

To win the war, with their bombs

and nylon stockings

Told nothing about my home town - Told nothing about who I am

Told nothing about this – this history

You know our past is – a mystery

We were building ships inventing the modern world

Slaving in factories – little boys and little girls

Granddad lost somewhere

in obscurity

How can he be a hero

with those bad British teeth

Told nothing about my home town - Told nothing about who I am

Told nothing about this – this history

You know our past is – a mystery

La la la - a mystery

Victory Road is a bubble in time……No beginning – no it just is

Victory Road saw hope fade and die…….We were the first of the socialists

But nobody told us - to hold our heads up – But nobody told us none of that stuff

Victory Road is a bubble in time

and they can’t understand why  we wear our best clothes to fight

on Friday and Saturday nights - well all we’ve got is our pride

and each other - and we can’t back down

till the day that we die

Victory Road is a bubble in time

You had to do the fag machine

Smash it open for the money

The Guvnor he don’t look too happy

I knew that this was coming

Oi! you little fuckers – wha’d yer think your doing

Oh yeah…..that’s your game

You don’t do that in my pub son…now you want some fun

Time you learnt a lesson…………..

Time you learnt a lesson…………..

Oh graham - where were you

When it all kicked off - last night

Went for the band - and a few drinks

Ended up fighting for our lives

Looked like you were doing alright

Yeah Billy, you can have a proper fight

Like I was doing alright ! – Alright !

Well I’ll tell you – you aint a lot of help

Are you out to - prove something ?

Don’t you ever pull that stunt again

I don’t wanna be - fighting for nothing

THIS AINT THE END OF IT

Billy and Victory mods / Judge

Well we held our own – some of their lot - got a right kicking

But Ernie got glassed – poor bastard - had 16 stiches in his face

and Pip – a pool cue smashed his hand - So much for the big break – with his band

And yer know this aint the end of it….. this aint the end of it…. Oh no.

Johnny Dempster and his brothers – yer know they run round here

Pub and clubs, protection rackets – don’t just stand there selling beer

And yer know they aint gonna take this lying down - Oh No

Coz they’re blokes with plenty of help

And sitting round here aint good for our health

………………..They think we’ll be shitting ourselves

So we gotta get tooled up

Hit em when they don’t expect it

Coz this is where we live

And if we don’t fight - we’ll never be respected…………

Is everyone in…… will we stick together

Is everyone in…… will we stick together

These are our streets – forever

Yeah everyone’s in – we’re in this together

………..These are our streets……. forever

William Charles James I have no alternative other than to hand you a custodial sentence…. Young man you are a menace to society… you will go to prison for 3 years.

NEW WAVE RADIO

Pip / Janice

The New Wave are playing on the radio - In factories, cafes - and fruit packers

It means the world to the ki-ids - from Victry Road and beyo-ond

It’s a dream come true - The start of something new

New hope - the impossible - we’re told that we can’t do

Ohhhhhh – I heard the New Wave – playing on the radio

Ohhhhhh - Have you heard the New Wave ?

The New Wave are playing on the radio - on building sites - and kids bedrooms

On trannies down the par-ark - just watch this is the star-art

It’s a dream come true - The start of something new

New hope - the impossible - we’re told that we can’t do

Ohhhhhh - what am I doing here ?

the Victory Road mods have all gone

smashed my guitar – stupid songs

New Wave  (rpt)   -    Did you hear the New Wave ?

I don’t like it here       I wanna go home

It’s a cage……There’s an eye in the metal door

I’m scared I don’t like the noises

Pip shut your eyes

Keep your own world safe inside

SOMEWHERE (WASTING TIME)

Sung by: Billy

We were kids just wasting time

and it don’t cost nothing to ride – across the black water to the other side

North where the old factories reek

and the outlook’s bleak – from the tower blocks to the disused docks

Across The river ....lalala.... on the ferry

Left us standing…..lalala..…on the jetty

While the river it flows away to the sea

We’d look to the Crown from The Pivvy

the lights a sight to see – at night - young, naive and free

And home we’d shout through the tunnel

never once stop to wonder - one day what would come to be

Across The river .....lalala..... on the ferry

Left us standing…..lalala..…on the jetty

While the river it flows away to the sea

Heard the engines roar like approaching thunder

Those twisting pools could drag us under

……. And who - would know ?

Across The river .....lalala..... on the ferry

Left us standing…...lalala….. on the jetty

While the river flows away to the sea

Going somewhere – but it never took you or me
